Restoring Predators as a Hedge against Climate Change
نویسندگان
چکیده
Climate change and the loss of ecologically relevant large terrestrial carnivore populations are two important challenges currently facing conservation practitioners (Ray et al. 2005, Sutherland et al. 2009). Little attention is given, however, to how these two problems might be related, and how mitigation eff orts for each might be united. Here we explain how predators cannot only infl uence the cause of climate change (atmospheric carbon) but also infl uence—directly and indirectly—climate impacts on their prey and on entire ecological communities. We draw on an emerging body of work to conceive ways in which the restoration of large carnivores might provide opportunities for both carnivore conservation and mitigation of climate change.

Top predators provide insurance against climate change.
Recent research by Wilmers et al. shows that top predators might buffer some of the ecological effects of climate change. Top predators can regulate the structure of entire communities and dampen their variability; however, in their absence, prey populations are likely to fluctuate greatly owing to bottom-up factors. Restoring top predators to their natural environment could provide insurance a...

متن کاملQuantifying the Carbon Balance of Forest Restoration and Wildfire under Projected Climate in the Fire-Prone Southwestern US
Climate projections for the southwestern US suggest a warmer, drier future and have the potential to impact forest carbon (C) sequestration and post-fire C recovery. Restoring forest structure and surface fire regimes initially decreases total ecosystem carbon (TEC), but can stabilize the remaining C by moderating wildfire behavior. Previous research has demonstrated that fire maintained forest...

NATURE CLIMATE CHANGE | VOL 5 | DECEMBER 2015 | www.nature.com/natureclimatechange Climate change is an urgent societal issue that can be addressed by a combination of reduced emissions and climate mitigation strategies, including those based on natural carbon (C) stores (that is, biosequestration). The need to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations combined with global interest in C trading and...
